Controversy over National drink status to Tea

Written By CineGlamour on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 | 6:29 am

The statement made by the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, on Sunday that India would declare 'tea' as the National drink by April next year has given rise to serious debate all over the country.

"Tea will be given national drink status by April 17 next year to coincide with the 212th birth anniversary of first Assamese tea planter and Sepoy Mutiny leader Maniram Dewan," he said, during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Assam Tea Planters Association in Assam.

However, a voice has risen now that Milk should be given national drink status, instead of tea. "Milk is the best energy drink and healthy drink in the world. How could tea be made national drink, instead of milk?," says a farmer.

Amul, which is one of the most trusted and biggest brands in the country, has also raised objection to the proposal of making tea a national drink.
